After 15 long days in the Atlantic Ocean, we have finally reached the most remote settlement on Earth, Tristan da Cunha. We’re in the middle of the ocean, between South America and Africa. Right here, there’s a tiny island you can barely see on the map. The nearest settlement is thousands of kilometers away from here. So in this entire vast area, no one lives except the people of Tristan. For centuries, the loneliest people on Earth have lived an unusual life here. Their population is just 222. There is not an airport on Tristan da Cunha. The only way to reach the island, or to leave it, is a very long sea voyage on one of the few ships that make the trip. So, how aware are these people of what’s happening in the world? What does it feel like to live in the middle of nowhere? Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the only settlement on Tristan da Cunha. There are just 148 structures here: 120 homes and 28 public buildings. What makes Tristan special isn’t just its remoteness. It is the people. They have a way of life and set of rules very different from the rest of the world. They might have the fairest and sensible system on Earth. There’s just one of almost everything a town needs here: a school, a hospital, a post office, and even a supermarket. Started by just a few people, this small settlement grew into the Tristan da Cunha we know today. But the island now faces a serious problem: its population is declining. Only eight babies have been born in the past five years, and the population has recently dropped by around 20%. The island doesn't allow permanent immigration either. Despite the shrinking population, islanders continue the way of life they've known for over 200 years.
